What Is the Killdeer Plains Wildlife Area?

Welcome to Killdeer Plains Wildlife Area, your gateway to the wonders of Central Ohio. This 9,230-acre wildlife area sits in the heart of the farming country in Sandusky, OH, only 25 minutes away from HideAway Country Inn. The park features farmland, prairies, grassland, woods, and water areas that include marsh, a 360-acre reservoir, an upground reservoir, and more than 125 ponds!

What Can You Do Here?

Killdeer is a beautiful place for nature lovers. You can go on a hike, hunt, go birdwatch, and even fish in the pond. Make sure you pack a rod to catch the local fish like bass and walleye! You will need a license to fish, which costs $19 for Ohio residents and $40 for out-of-state visitors. If you plan to go birdwatching, bring along some binoculars and marvel at the hawks and owls!

Visit the Ohio Bird Sanctuary, Too!

After you explore the Killdeer Plains Wildlife Area, plan to visit the Ohio Bird Sanctuary. It’s 50 minutes away from the first park, so we recommend going on separate days so that you’re not rushed for time. This 90-acre preserve is the perfect place to learn more about Ohio native birds. Hike the footpaths through woods and marshes to see the different species in their habitat, and check out the exhibits in the museum area. Most displays are wheelchair and stroller accessible!
