Get Scared When You Visit Ohio State Reformatory

The Ohio State Reformatory has stunning architecture to look at and lots of history. But many people visit the Reformatory for another reason: To get scared or catch a glimpse of the paranormal.

The unique building was constructed in 1886 using a combination of Victorian Gothic, Queen Anne, Richardsonian Romanesque styles. One hundred and fifty offenders took up residence when the Reformatory opened in 1896. Over its lifetime, more than 155,000 men spent time in the prison, before it closed at the end of 1990.

Once the Shawshank Redemption movie used the Reformatory as the setting for its fictional prison, the location really took off as a must-see destination. But not just for its history or movie fame.

People flock to the Ohio State Reformatory to experience frightful, scary stuff you can’t get elsewhere, like:

  • The paranormal penitentiaryBuy a ticket and see if you can make it through the fright-fest maze called the “Monster Lockdown.” Robert Kurtzman, a special FX master out of Hollywood, designs the scary onslaught of terror. This event runs on Sundays, beginning September 23 through October 30.
  • Public ghost hunting. Go on a public one-of-a-kind ghost hunt in the prison with a group. The cost includes soda and pizza, as well as complimentary beverages. Get your tickets for Friday night hunts, starting at 7:00 p.m.
  • Private hunting. Call the Reformatory and inquire about a private ghost hunting event.
  • Public ghost walks. Take a guided tour through the Reformatory for two hours. Learn the stories living behind the walls of the building.
  • Private ghost walks. Bring your group and take a guided tour of the haunted prison.

Before you go, the Reformatory has a list of “most haunted sites” that you’ll surely want to visit. Get your scare on and be sure to stop by the first floor of the east wing, the middle administration third floor, the subbasement, the chapel, the west attic, the administration basement, the east and west cell blocks and the hole (solitary confinement).
