Hobo Day

Saturday, August 31st 2013 - 10:00 am - 3:00 pm
at T & OC Train Station
700 East Rensselaer St.

The Bucyrus Preservation Society is again sponsoring “Hobo Day at the Station,” a Peddlers Market at the site of the T & OC train station, 700 E. Rensselaer St., Bucyrus, Ohio, and will be partnering with the Lincoln Highway Association at this Hobo Day event to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the completion of the Lincoln Highway.  The T & OC Train Station was originally located on the highway before the railroad overpasses were built, which connects the station to the highway even though the highway does not go directly by the station any more.  The event will take place Saturday, August 31, from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM, and there will also be a peddler’s market with vendors and crafts persons selling good quality items. The proceeds from the space fees are going to help with the restoration of the station.  For more information concerning the Lincoln Highway Association, contact Mike Hocker at 419-468-6773.

Auntie Darla will be on hand to read stories to the kids who visit Hobo Day.  Darla Turner is making arrangements for the children of all ages to receive a special treat after hearing stories about the Lincoln Highway and about Abraham Lincoln as well as stories of train travel.  The planning committee is excited about reaching out to the young people in this way to give them a better understanding of early travel on the highways as well as learning of the railroad.

The Bucyrus Preservation Society has held a Hobo Day Peddlers Market the Saturdays of Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends for the last 11 years. This is a free event where vendors and crafts persons such as hand crocheted items, jewelry, Pampered Chef, Avon, Watkins products,  and home grown flowers set up booths in the parking lot to sell their merchandise.  Plenty of food will also be available from vendors selling sandwiches, kettle corn, and baked goods.

The day could also include visits from members of the Hobo Society of America who would be on hand to entertain with music and stories of their adventures across the country.  A full line up of music to entertain and amuse the visitors is also planned, along with displays from local historical societies and special interest groups.

The Bucyrus Preservation Society has spent the last 12 years restoring the historic T&OC Train Station, which was a busy transportation site until 1934 when the passenger service was discontinued from the site.  Over the summer, volunteers have begun working on restoring the woodwork inside of the station, placing new tile surrounds in the fireplaces, and finishing the handicap ramp to the gift shop.  A dedication service is planned for the near future where these volunteers that have spent countless hours in the total restoration work of the station will be acknowledged.
