Tips for Homemade Spa and Beauty Treatments, including Lemon-Brown Sugar Body Scrub!

Although relaxing spa getaways are important to schedule now and then for stress relief, health, and beauty reasons, there is so much more that can be done in the comfort of your own home between visits! Want to whip up some home recipes or learn some tricks you can do right in the comfort of your own kitchen and bathroom? We’ve got some good at-home spa ideas and treatments for you to use throughout the year.

Starting with a list for the grocery store or by raiding your cupboards or refrigerator, there are many foods that offer beauty essentials that can be used every day or week to care for your skin and body.

For instance, lemons are a natural deodorizer, cleaning agent, disinfectant, and astringent. Mix sweet with the sour for a nice smelling concoction, as brown sugar is wonderful for exfoliation (you’ll find a recipe below which uses both of these natural products).

To whiten teeth, an organic mixture with strawberries will remove stains and discoloration on your teeth. Try it out by crushing one ripe strawberry and mix in 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda. Apply it to your teeth with your toothbrush and let it set for 5 minutes; then brush with your regular toothpaste. Repeat once a week!

For hair that is silky, shiny, and PH-balanced, try using white or apple cider vinegar mixed with water as a rinse. If using white vinegar, use a recipe of one part water to three parts vinegar and if using apple cider vinegar use 10 parts water to one part vinegar. Distribute through your hair, wait 5-10 minutes to let it soak in, and then rinse it out or even wash your hair shampoo.

Now, here’s that body scrub recipe to try, from Sun Times Media. The scrub has lemon to work as a disinfectant and will cleanse clogged pores. The oils from the mixture will leave you with soft, healthy glowing skin.

Brown Sugar Lemony Body Scrub

1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup sea salt
2 tbsp coconut oil or olive oil
1 tbsp of honey
2 tbsp of freshly squeezed lemon juice
1 tbsp of your favorite essential oil (they recommend bergamot for energy, eucalyptus or spearmint for stress relief and lavender or jasmine for something more relaxing.)

Mix all the ingredients in a bowl until it turns into a paste. Apply to moist skin in circular motion using your fingertips to help skin cells slough off faster. Rinse off with warm water. Apply your favorite moisturizer. Results: smooth, soft glowing skin.
