HideAway Inn Adds Creative Californian Michael David Winery Selections to Unique Wine List

The Michael David Winery, located in Lodi, California, has been cultivating grapes and making wine for at least a century, while farming land in Lodi since the 1850s. Now, it stands in its six generation of grape growers and continues to offer quality wines with unique and eye catching labels.

The Michael David Winery, formed under the watchful eye of two brothers, Michael and David Phillips who are the fifth generation to work the land, has also adopted the mission of sustainable and green farming and are some of the most progressive sustainable farmers in California. Since the 2011 vintage, 100 percent of their fruit crushed for wine was certified as sustainable.

The vineyards are irrigated by the Mokelumne River at Michael David Winery. This river carries crystal-clear water from the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and in turn, deposits minerals into the rich soils upon which the grapes thrive.

The winery also states that “though not certified organic, they strive to use all natural methods including integrated pest management, beneficial insects for pest control, trellising, leaf pulling and natural mined sulfur for mildew control.” That’s great news for wine drinkers looking for quality wine to tantalize their palates, since it not only tastes divine, but it's made in the historic, family-owned wineries that care about the environment and the people who inhabit it.

HideAway Country Inn delights in offering the best wines to guests, in the dining room at Restaurant 1938 and in Pub 1938. As we add wines to our list, we are proud to begin offering wines from Michael David Winery. We’ll now be offering the 6th Sense Syrah, Petite Petit and 7 Deadly Zins labels.

The 6th Sense Syrah, made from the black grape and into red wine, has tasting notes of its 2012 bottling that state that the grape is large, juicy and tangy. It is “full of flavor in the same deep-red tones as the aromas, tannins are tame. The mid-palate offers plum and blackberry, with a touch of mulberry.”

One of the first Syrah vineyards was planted in 1982. The 2012 was an exceptional vintage for Lodi, with the grape exceeding average standards across all varietals and ideal weather that made for a wonderfully reliable harvest. It was aged 12 months in French oak barrels.

The 7 Deadly Zins 2011 bottling has made for a full, rich wine with more texture and rich fruity taste. Its tasting notes reveal that “hints of tapenade, new saddle leather, black cherries and black currants. It offers a lot of flavor for its price.”

To create a unique Zinfandel that no one could refuse, the brothers chose seven superior vineyards in which to mix the fruit together into one wine! The winery said that “2011 was a very Bordeaux like growing season and an extremely cool vintage from a small crop, resulting in lean, high acid wines with strong aging potential.” This wine was aged 12 months in American Oak.

The 2012 Petite Petit’s tasting notes state that its “soft, opaque purple-colored wine exhibits impressive density as well as lots of blueberry and blackberry fruit intermixed with graphite, licorice and a hint of tar.” It is a mixture of 85 percent Petite Sirah and 15 percent Petit Verdot and ages for twelve years in French Oak.

The winery states that this wine is “a joyous explosion of color and fun, it is a substantial, dense, full-bodied, whopper style of wine loaded with pure black fruit and vanilla flavors that coat the palate. It reveals remarkable richness with a finish that is slightly dry and seems to linger.”
