Bucyrus Home to Long-Running Bratwurst Festival: Historic German Roots and Community Unite

Scenic and historic Bucyrus is home to world famous bratwurst! Seeped in this German heritage, each August The Bucyrus Bratwurst Festival brings crowds for a three-day weekend full of food (including those famous brats), entertainment, parades, and fun!

The Bucyrus Bratwurst Festival has brought the sweet and spicy smell of bratwursts to the area since 1968, this year on the calendar for Aug. 14, 15, and 16, 2014.

With a pageant to crown the Bratwurst Queen over the weekend, and entertainment such as country star Aaron Tippin on Aug. 15 and Ohio proud Columbus rock band Red Wanting Blue, who have climbed Billboard charts and even appeared on David Letterman, on Aug. 16, this is one festival you’ll not want to miss! Not to mention all types of food eating contests, food vendors, and of course, grilled brats!

Here is a video from The Bucyrus Bratwurst Festival 2013, if you'd like to see for yourself what this cultural and community festival is all about:

The theme for The Bucyrus Bratwurst Festival 2014 is a play on words: "The Big Brat Theory." Of course, brat making is a science, and Bucyrus has been famous for its hand-made brats for as long as most can remember. Many will come from food, but there is so much more to do too.

New this year in terms of activities is an art contest keep in line with another German tradition, beer! Steins can be created by local artists with Bratwurst and 2014 adorning the stein in some fashion and they will be sold at their stein auction!

Bucyrus is known as America’s Bratwurst Capitol and yet Carle’s Bratwurst is the only original Bratwurst maker left, making brats since 1929. However, the festival features various renditions of all types of bratwurst in celebration of the strong German heritage.

So just what is bratwurst and what is the origin? Bratwurst is an Old High German word, taken from brat—finely chopped meat or “meat without waste” and wurst—sausage. Brats are a German tradition that dates back to 1313 in Germany. It was something they ate to brave the harsh winters and not waste any meat scraps. Bratwurst was brought to North American by German immigrants, of course.

The Bucyrus Bratwurst Festival is a way for residents to return to their roots of the city as its first settlers were mainly of German ancestry when it was established in 1822. Be sure to keep up to date about the festival via their website or their Facebook page (which seems to have the most up-to-date information).
